PAVIR’s primary affiliate is the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) since PAVIR’s inception in 1988.

PAVIR and Stanford University signed an agreement outlining how PAVIR and Stanford University will cooperate in conducting research that includes dually appointed persons, holding both a Stanford faculty appointment and a VAPAHCS position in 2006. Externally funded research conducted by researchers who are dually appointed and which is predominately conducted in VAPAHCS space, is administered by PAVIR.

Research collaborations with colleagues in different institutions are sought out by many because ties to other laboratories can help address research questions across different disciplines, or provide access to expert knowledge in highly specialized areas.  About 25% of our major projects subcontract part of the research work to a trusted colleague.  Similarly, PAVIR serves as a subcontractor on more than 30 studies to support the successful conduct of research projects awarded to other institutions.   The determination of which institution is the prime awardee usually depends on where the majority of work is being completed.
